Installation: UPX
These instructions describe the steps required to download and install UPX on Windows.
UPX is a free, portable, extendable, high-performance executable packer for several different executable formats. It achieves an excellent compression ratio and offers very fast decompression.
UPX uses the NRV compression library for compression services. It is intended to be Commercial Quality Freeware.
UPX is copyrighted software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, with special exceptions granting the free usage for commercial programs as stated in the UPX License Agreement.
At the time of writing this article the current version of UPX was 3.04.

In a web browser navigate to http://upx.sourceforge.net.

From the Download section click link upx304w.zip.
|
|

The installation media in a .zip archive named upx304w.zip starts to download. Note the directory upx304w.zip is downloaded to.

Extract upx304w.zip.
Right-click upx304w.zip and select Extract All.... In the extraction wizard accept all defaults.

A folder named upx304w is extracted containing the following files:
BUGS
COPYING
LICENSE
NEWS
README
README.1ST

TODO
upx.1
upx.doc
upx.exe
upx.html

Copy upx.exe to a location in the Path environment variable or update the Path environment variable by executing the following steps:

Click the Start button.
|
|
|
|
Right-click My Computer.
|
|
|
|
Select Properties.
|
|
|
|
Click the Advanced tab.
|
|
|
|
Click the Environment Variables button.
|
|
|
|
In the System variables section select the Path variable and click Edit to edit it.
|
|
|
|
Add ;[upx] to the end of the variable value where [upx] is the directory containing upx.exe. For example, if upx.exe is located in directory c:\upx304w, move the cursor to the end of the variable value and type ;c:\upx304w.
Click OK to update the variable.
